According to the CDC, “...about one in four adults (28%) age 65 and older, report falling each year. This results in about 36 million falls each year. While not all falls result in an injury, about 37% of those who fall reported an injury that required medical treatment or restricted their activity for at least one day, resulting in an estimated 8 million fall injuries.” Additionally, “Falls among adults age 65 and older are very costly. Each year about $50 billion is spent on medical costs related to non-fatal fall injuries and $754 million is spent related to fatal falls.”
As the aging population of the United States continues to grow, it is more important than ever to solve aging-in-place solutions because most Americans want to stay home while they age, but need increased accessibility and safety. What are some aging-in-place solutions? Installing grab bars, constructing a wheelchair ramp, widening a doorway and removing a tub with a walk-in or roll-in shower are all types of home modifications that can greatly enhance someone’s safety and accessibility within their home. Plus, doing a small or large home modification can not only increase safety and potentially reduce the costs related to falls, but it can also improve an individual’s activities of daily living (ADLs), like bathing, toileting, brushing teeth and getting dressed.
